Spano and members of the City Council announced the proposed ban, which would make Yonkers potentially the first city in New York State to ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes.
“E-cigarettes are widely accepted as an addicting gateway drug targeted at our youth. We risk the health of an entire generation of young people who may become addicted to nicotine through the appeal of flavored e-cigarettes,” Spano said.
“We need our federal and state leaders to take action to address this problem effectively, but here in Yonkers will not wait to act while more of our children become addicted and sickened by e-cigarette use.”
According to the CDC:
- The use of e-cigarettes is unsafe for kids, teens, and young adults.
- Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine. Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s.
- E-cigarettes can contain other harmful substances besides nicotine.
- Young people who use e-cigarettes may be more likely to smoke cigarettes in the future.
